Boxing Day, 1895

D awn broke quietly in the spotless parlour. Leroux rubbed his face and remembered where he was. He stretched and wished he had not. Lara and Kate emerged into the soft grey light and fixed breakfast and plenty of good Boer coffee from the Magaliesburg mountains.

‘Have you had any more thoughts?’ Lara said.

‘Just questions. The Irish seem to be running a protection racket or just stealing gold to raise money for their cause. But somebody else must be helping them. And what are they doing with the guns? Too many for their own use.’

‘What will you do?’

‘I’ve got to find out one way or another if Muller is with them. Rhodes is relying on me to follow up any connections with the Germans.’

Lara nodded. She seemed to approve. ‘I’m going in for the early shift now. Why don’t you go to the hotel and get a doctor to put in some stitches? I’ll send any replies from Rhodes to you there. You need to rest. I’ll come and see you when I finish work, and if you’ve got something to tell Hammond we’ll go and find him – they’re hosting a reception later today, aren’t they?’

‘Is that a yes?’

Leroux followed Lara down the stairs. She fetched a bicycle from the back hall, and he watched her all the way to the main road, when she turned, waved, and was gone. Leroux followed in the same direction to find a cab as the town began to wake.
